Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Zaydi seeks Iranian guarantee for oil tankers in Hormuz

During a visit to Tehran, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Zaydi met Iranian President Masoud Beheshti and senior officials, requesting that Iran ensure the safe passage of Iraqi‑leased oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran gave no clear acceptance or refusal. Zaydi highlighted Iraq’s reliance on oil revenues – which fell from roughly 90 million barrels per month before the war to about 10 million in April – and urged cooperation to protect the strategic waterway that carries most of Baghdad’s export earnings.

The talks also covered broader security cooperation, with Zaydi affirming Iraq will not allow its territory to be used to threaten Iran’s security and praising Iran’s role in combating ISIS. Both sides referenced a 2023 security agreement and sought to advance a comprehensive strategic partnership, including economic and infrastructure projects.
