Irbid to implement smart traffic signal system
Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Administration, Walid Al-Masri, has launched a smart traffic signal project in Irbid. The initiative is set to begin operations at three major intersections—Al-Thaqafa, Barada, and Al-Darawsha—on November 15.
The project, funded by a donation exceeding 1.5 million dinars from engineer Abdul Rahman Al-Khatib, aims to modernize the city's traffic infrastructure. The plan involves connecting 36 traffic lights to a central control room at the Irbid Greater Municipality building to manage traffic flow automatically using sensors and surveillance cameras.
Minister Al-Masri emphasized the need for robust cybersecurity to protect the smart systems from hacking. He also directed that the intersection near Yarmouk University include specialized features to assist people with disabilities, specifically the visually impaired and those with mobility challenges. The project is intended to alleviate congestion in a city of one million residents that sees an additional 800,000 commuters daily.
