Ireland accepts recommendations for CHI healthcare inquiry
The Irish Government has accepted all recommendations from an independent scoping report regarding spina bifida and scoliosis services at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI). Prepared by Senior Counsel Remy Farrell, the report serves as a foundation for a proposed statutory Commission of Investigation. Department of Health officials will now collaborate with the Office of the Attorney General to draft the Terms of Reference, which will define the investigation's scope and legal framework.
Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill acknowledged the input of families and advocacy groups in shaping the recommendations. However, Labour health spokesperson Marie Sherlock has criticized the proposed approach, arguing that the investigation must be more comprehensive. Sherlock expressed concerns that the inquiry might not sufficiently address systemic governance issues or include patients treated at CHI hospitals prior to 2019, suggesting that administrative convenience should not limit the scope of the investigation.
