Ireland and Alberta expand free RSV immunization access for infants

Ireland and Alberta are implementing programs to provide free respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) immunizations for infants.

In Ireland, eligible babies can receive the nirsevimab antibody injection to protect against seasonal RSV. Babies born between September 1, 2026, and February 28, 2027, will be offered the immunization in hospitals shortly after birth. Those born between March 1, 2026, and August 31, 2026, may receive it through appointments arranged with a GP. High-risk children under 24 months may also qualify following medical assessment.

Alberta has become the ninth Canadian province to offer free RSV immunization to all newborns born in a hospital during the respiratory virus season (November through April). This move follows guidance from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI). Research led by the University of Calgary indicates that the single-dose monoclonal antibody, nirsevimab, reduced ICU admissions among infants by 97 per cent in provinces where it was previously implemented. Alberta reported 549 infant hospitalizations due to RSV last season, with 66 requiring ICU care.
