Ireland approves construction of New National Maternity Hospital

The Irish government has approved the construction of the New National Maternity Hospital (NMH) at the St Vincent’s University Hospital campus in Elm Park, Dublin. The project, which was first announced in 2013, is scheduled to begin main construction in early 2027 with an expected completion date in 2033.

The seven-storey facility will span over 54,000 square metres and is designed to accommodate 10,000 births annually. Planned amenities include 244 single-occupancy en-suite inpatient rooms, five operating theatres, 24 birthing rooms, and specialized neonatal, maternity, gynaecological, and critical care services. The hospital will serve Dublin and the South-East while functioning as a national tertiary referral centre for complex maternity cases.

The approved capital budget is €1.861 billion, covering construction, design, equipment, and technology. John Sisk & Son is expected to serve as the main contractor, with Designer Group as the reserved specialist contractor for mechanical and electrical works. While the new facility is being developed, the existing National Maternity Hospital at Holles Street will continue its current operations.
