Ireland Budget 2027: Focus on energy and fuel costs

As Ireland prepares to announce Budget 2027 next week, political leaders and senators are focusing on mitigating rising energy and fuel costs for households, businesses, and farmers.

Tánaiste Simon Harris expressed concern regarding the cost of gas and home heating oil. While indicating that the government may extend excise cuts and consider differentiating home heating oil from carbon tax trajectories, Harris cautioned that a single budget cannot fully offset the impact of global energy shocks. He noted that the upcoming budget aims to provide “breathing space” through targeted interventions and potential increases to the higher income tax threshold.

In the Seanad, Fine Gael Senators have called for continued support for those most vulnerable to energy price fluctuations, specifically highlighting the elderly, people with disabilities, low-income households, and rural residents. The group is advocating for permanent solutions to reduce energy bills, such as accelerating home retrofitting and increasing investments in renewables, grid storage, and interconnection to reduce exposure to global fuel price volatility.
