Ireland coach apologizes for ‘genocide’ comments before Israel match
Ireland national football team coach Heimir Hallgrímsson has apologized for using the term ‘genocide’ to describe actions in Gaza prior to his team’s Nations League match against Israel in Debrecen, Hungary. Hallgrímsson stated that he ‘certainly used a heavy word’ and acknowledged that while there is significant support for Palestine in Ireland, the term was a mistake.
The match has been marked by high tension and political scrutiny. Reports indicated that some Irish players were reluctant to participate due to the situation in Gaza. Notably, goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was absent from the squad, reportedly choosing not to participate in the match.
Israel has criticized the stance of the Irish side, labeling it hypocritical. Hallgrímsson noted that the pressure regarding the fixture has increased since the draw in February, citing widespread protests and campaigns in Ireland against the match.
