Ireland manager and Israel FA clash over genocide comments

Tensions have escalated between the Israel Football Association and Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson ahead of their UEFA Nations League fixtures. The dispute follows Hallgrímsson's comments during a squad announcement, where he stated that the team is “playing against genocide, not with it,” while noting that the squad is playing against Israel rather than alongside them.

The Israel FA responded sharply on social media, accusing the manager of embodying “stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy.” The association is reportedly considering a formal complaint to UEFA regarding these remarks.

In Ireland, pressure to boycott the matches is mounting. More than 160 Irish athletes, including Olympians and former internationals, signed an open letter via the Irish Sport for Palestine group urging the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to boycott the games. Protests have also been held at the Irish team's hotel.

The FAI previously voted to proceed with the matches to avoid UEFA sanctions and significant financial losses. Due to operational challenges and security concerns, the matches will be held at neutral venues: the first in Debrecen, Hungary, on September 27, and the second in Bačka Topola, Serbia, on October 4. The second match is expected to be played behind closed doors. Additionally, the Irish broadcaster RTE will provide a limited broadcast without commentary or advertising.
