Ireland EV charging costs rise to match petrol prices

Public electric‑vehicle charging operator Ionity raised its Irish price to 85 cents per kilowatt‑hour, a 4 % increase that makes public charging as expensive per kilometre as petrol or diesel. Ionity cited the war between the United States and Iran and disrupted LNG supplies as driving higher wholesale electricity prices across Europe.

Ireland’s Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman welcomed the recent drop in domestic greenhouse‑gas emissions but warned the price hike could undermine the country’s climate targets. Social Democrat TD Jennifer Whitmore called the increase “price gouging”, urged a government inquiry, and warned that higher charging costs could lock out renters and urban dwellers from the EV market. She also highlighted the risk of missing EU 2030 emission targets and the potential €28 billion in fines for non‑compliance.
