Ireland expands biomethane sector with new grid connections
Ireland’s biomethane industry has seen significant expansion following the connection of two major plants to the national gas grid in August 2026. Bia Energy’s €90 million, 120 GWh facility in Huntstown, Co. Dublin, connected on 12 August, followed by College Group’s €30 million facility in Nobber, Co. Meath.
David Kelly, CEO of Gas Networks Ireland, stated that these connections demonstrate Ireland’s capability to utilize indigenous renewable gas at scale and signal the importance of biomethane in the nation’s future energy system and energy security.
Additionally, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon opened a €3 million on-farm integrated grass biorefinery and anaerobic digestion demonstration plant in Co. Cork on 1 September. This facility is designed to process fresh grass into high-protein animal feed, bioenergy, biofertilizer, and grass fiber for packaging applications.
