Ireland faces growing shortage of general practitioners

Ireland’s primary‑care system is under strain as the number of people seeking a family doctor continues to outpace the supply of GPs. By the end of July, 5,775 holders of a Medical Card or GP Visit Card had asked the Health Service Executive (HSE) for help finding a practice, and the true figure is likely higher because many patients do not report the problem directly.

Between 2020 and 2025 the Irish population grew by about 480,000 (roughly 10 %), while the total number of GPs rose by only 193 – an increase of just 6.4 %. This mismatch has led to longer waiting times, reduced continuity of care and patients being redirected to substitute doctors or private clinics. The shortage is most acute around major cities and in rural areas that already had limited medical services.

The HSE says it is working on solutions, but the gap between demand and GP capacity remains a significant challenge for the Irish health system.
