Ireland faces rising energy and fuel costs amid geopolitical tensions
Households and businesses in Ireland are facing increased pressure from rising fuel and energy prices as winter approaches. The upward trend is driven by higher wholesale oil and natural gas prices, which are linked to geopolitical conflicts in Iran, Ukraine, and Yemen. Additionally, European energy storage levels are currently lower than they were at the same time last year.
Wholesale gas prices are reportedly trading at approximately three times their levels prior to the conflict involving Iran. While consumers on fixed-term plans may have temporary protection, those on variable tariffs are more exposed to these market fluctuations.
For the business sector, energy expenditure remains a significant concern. In 2024, Irish resident enterprises spent approximately €16.3 billion on energy purchases, with electricity and natural gas accounting for roughly 58% of that total. Projections from the Central Bank of Ireland suggest energy-price inflation could reach 5.8% in 2027, with wholesale electricity price assumptions for that year recently revised upwards by 15.3%.
