Kosovo defeats Republic of Ireland 1-0 in Nations League opener
Kosovo secured a 1-0 victory against the Republic of Ireland in their UEFA Nations League opener at the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina. The decisive goal was scored in the 83rd minute by Kosovo captain Vedat Muriqi, who headed the ball into the net following a rebound.
Kosovo dominated much of the match, recording an expected goals (xG) of 2.74 compared to Ireland's 0.25. Despite the scoreline, Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made several significant saves to prevent a larger deficit. Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson admitted his side was second best, stating that too many players were ‘off their game’.
Following the match, Kosovo players displayed a symbolic gesture by wearing white t-shirts with the message ‘Justice for the Liberators’ (Drejtësi për Çlirimtarët). The gesture was intended to show solidarity with former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders who were recently sentenced by the court in The Hague. Kosovo captain Vedat Muriqi dedicated the win to these former leaders and the KLA.
