Irish Review Finds No Conclusive Evidence Linking Aughinish Alumina Exports to Russian Weapons

Ireland’s Department of Enterprise completed an independent review of the Aughinish Alumina plant in Limerick after media reports suggested its alumina could be reaching Russian military manufacturers. The review concluded that there were "no adverse findings" linking the exported alumina to Russian weapons, but it also highlighted a lack of verifiable internal trade data that prevents a definitive ruling.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin, speaking with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, said the investigation was "almost complete" and its results would be shared with the European Commission. Both leaders stressed the need to prevent any material from reaching Russia that could support its war effort.

Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke noted that while the company supplied data asserting its alumina is used only for civilian aluminium production, that information could not be independently verified. The department is considering third‑party verification of the alumina flow, and the findings have been forwarded to the EU Commission for further assessment.
