Ireland Government proposes €10 daily cap on hospital parking fees
The Irish Government is considering a proposal to cap hospital parking charges at €10 per day to improve healthcare affordability for patients, families, and staff. Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has directed the Health Service Executive (HSE) to review parking fees, potentially implementing recommendations from a 2018 report that suggested this daily limit.
Currently, parking costs vary significantly across the country. While nine of Ireland’s 45 public hospitals offer free parking, the remaining 36 utilize various charging models. Last year, hospital parking generated €17.8 million in revenue. The HSE is expected to conduct a national review, with findings due in the first quarter of next year, to determine if a consistent national approach should be adopted.
Minister MacNeill noted that a balance must be struck between ensuring accessibility for those attending medical appointments and preventing hospital car parks from being used as low-cost alternatives to city-center parking, particularly as many facilities are managed by private entities.
