Ireland housing policy shifts as authorities urged to limit turnkey property purchases

Ireland’s housing strategy is facing significant scrutiny as reports indicate the government may be changing its approach to turnkey housing. Local authorities and councils have reportedly been encouraged to stop purchasing turnkey properties—completed or near-complete homes transferred to public bodies—to avoid competing with young families and private buyers for limited stock.

Critics suggest that council involvement in the turnkey market may be inadvertently driving up property prices. Additionally, approved housing bodies are facing new constraints; despite aiming to increase output, some are being told to plateau their construction numbers. While these bodies built approximately 4,200 houses last year, there are indications from the Department of Housing that annual targets may be capped to allow the private market more space to operate.
