Ireland launches €1.5m Active Travel Community Fund
The National Transport Authority (NTA) has launched the first Active Travel Community Fund, offering €1.5 million in support from the Department of Transport. The fund is designed for organisations to develop programmes that encourage a shift from private car use toward walking, cycling, and wheeling. Applications are being accepted for a six-week window and will be evaluated based on cost-effectiveness, community need, and accessibility for all ages and abilities, including children and people with disabilities.
In a related development, the Safe Routes to School Programme has expanded, with 83 additional schools joining the initiative. This brings the national total of participating schools to 609. The programme implements safety measures such as upgraded footpaths, improved pedestrian crossings, and specialized road markings to make school commutes safer and more attractive for families. Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien noted that the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and foster healthier, more sustainable communities.
