Ireland Park redevelopment: Liverpool Council plan to replace fields with car park
Liverpool Council has approved a redevelopment plan for Ireland Park in western Sydney that will replace three green space playing fields with a car park. The decision, made during an extraordinary council meeting in September, has drawn criticism from local community members and sports organizers.
The Liverpool Rangers, a grassroots football club based at the park, warns that the loss of playing space will force the club to reduce its number of junior teams and increase registration and uniform fees to remain viable. Committee secretary Vira Valmas expressed concerns that rising costs could prevent families from participating in sports altogether.
Additionally, parents have raised safety concerns regarding the proposed location of a new playground. The plan places the playground behind an amenities building, out of direct view from the active playing fields, which critics argue could increase risks related to antisocial behavior.
