Ireland plans major reforms to citizenship and naturalisation rules
The Irish government is preparing significant reforms to the citizenship and naturalisation process. The proposed changes, announced by Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan, represent the largest overhaul of citizenship rules in decades.
A central component of the reform is the increase of the required reckonable residency period from five years to eight years. While many residents expressed support for new language and civics tests intended to aid integration, the change to residency requirements has caused widespread stress and anxiety.
Many current residents, such as those on skilled employment permits, have called for a transition period. They argue that individuals who established their lives and careers in Ireland under existing rules should be treated fairly rather than being subject to the new, longer residency mandates.
