Republic of Ireland defeats Israel 3-0 amid Gaza conflict protests

The Republic of Ireland national football team secured a 3-0 victory against Israel in a UEFA Nations League match held at a neutral venue in Debrecen, Hungary. The match was marked by significant political protests from the Irish squad regarding the conflict in Gaza.

Before kickoff, Irish players wore black armbands to honor victims in Gaza. During the playing of the Israeli national anthem, the Irish players and staff bowed their heads. Additionally, the teams did not participate in the traditional pre-match handshake or the exchange of pennants between captains Dara O’Shea and Manor Solomon.

The decision to play followed a squad vote after significant internal debate and pressure from the ‘Stop The Game’ campaign. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the squad, stating it was wrong to participate due to his personal beliefs regarding the conflict.

Following the match, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticized the Irish team, accusing them of being on the ‘wrong side of history.’ Conversely, Irish manager Heimir Hallgrimsson stated the players' actions served to raise global awareness of the situation in Gaza.
