Ireland politicians call for intervention over planned transport fare hikes

Political representatives in Ireland are calling for government intervention following announcements by the National Transport Authority regarding planned public transport fare increases set for 2027.

Senator Maria McCormack of Sinn Féin expressed concern that the hikes will disproportionately affect commuters traveling from Laois to Dublin for work and education. She also criticized the decision to remove Open Return rail tickets, arguing it reduces flexibility for families and commuters. McCormack suggested that increasing costs while reducing flexibility contradicts efforts to encourage people to leave cars at home.

Dublin North West Councillor Conor Reddy of People Before Profit described the proposed increases as “outrageous” given the ongoing cost-of-living emergency. Reddy advocated for a shift toward free, frequent public transport and increased infrastructure investment, arguing that current government policy has prioritized private car use and electric vehicle subsidies over a robust public transit network.
