Ireland: Presidential visits and political debates in Gaeltacht regions

Various developments are occurring within Irish Gaeltacht communities. President Catherine Connolly is scheduled to make official visits to Tory Island and Inis Bó Finne in Donegal at the end of the month. This marks the first time an Irish President has officially visited Inis Bó Finne.

In the political sphere, Taoiseach Micheál Martin addressed the Dáil regarding the status of the Irish language. Responding to queries from Deputy Ken O’Flynn, Martin stated there is no connection between the language and the role of a Special Rapporteur for Ethnicity, asserting that the government continues to support the language through official and constitutional status.

Meanwhile, MEP Billy Kelleher has called for urgent government action to improve healthcare and nursing services on Clare Island. Kelleher expressed concern over the lack of full-time nursing availability, noting that the aging population on the island faces significant challenges when requiring medical tests or care during peak tourist seasons.
