Ireland proposes 8% cut to EU budget plan for 2028–2034
The Irish EU presidency has proposed an 8% reduction to the European Commission's budget plan for the 2028–2034 period, bringing the total to €1.6 trillion ($1.79 trillion). While this represents an 8% decrease from the Commission's original proposal, it still constitutes a 30% increase over the current 2021–2027 budget.
The proposal aims to reconcile competing interests between member states. It includes a 3% cut in spending on agriculture, fisheries, and regional development, alongside a 13% reduction in spending on competitiveness and security. The plan seeks to balance new priorities such as defense, research, and innovation with core existing policies.
In response, music industry organizations have voiced strong opposition to the proposed cuts. They argue that the reduction to the AgoraEU budget—from the Commission's proposed €8.6 billion to approximately €6 billion—represents a disproportionate 30% cut to cultural funding. Industry representatives claim such reductions threaten Europe's musical ecosystem, which contributes €81.9 billion to the EU GDP.
