Irish EU Presidency proposes significant cuts to 2028-2034 budget

The Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union has proposed a draft budget for the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework that has sparked significant political backlash. The proposal suggests a total commitment of approximately 1.62 trillion euros, representing a reduction of between 140 billion and 159 billion euros compared to the European Commission's initial plans.

Critics, including the European People's Party and various MEPs, have expressed disapproval. The European Commission has voiced concerns regarding reduced financial flexibility for unforeseen crises, while member states like Portugal, Spain, and France have warned that cuts to cohesion funding could undermine EU solidarity. Specific areas facing potential reductions include regional development, agriculture, fisheries, and digital infrastructure.

Proponents of the cuts, often referred to as frugal nations, are pushing for a shift in focus toward defense, migration management, and digital security. Negotiations are expected to continue through 2026, with the goal of implementing the new budget by January 2028.
