Ireland proposes increasing citizenship residence requirement to eight years
The Irish government plans to increase the residence requirement for citizenship from five years to eight years. Under the proposed changes, adult applicants will also be required to demonstrate financial self-sufficiency and pass both language and civics examinations.
Ministerial confirmation indicates that the new rules will apply strictly, meaning individuals who have already completed nearly five years of residence, such as those with four years and ten months, would still be required to meet the full eight-year threshold. Senator Aubrey McCarthy has raised concerns in the Seanad, arguing that the change is unfair to those who arrived in Ireland under previous regulations.
The policy shift impacts foreign nationals living in Ireland, including those on Critical Skills permits. For some, such as Belarusian and Russian nationals, the inability to secure citizenship or stable documentation poses significant risks regarding passport renewals, travel, and safety if forced to return to their home countries.
