Ireland public sector workers strike over pay and cost of living
Approximately 300,000 public sector workers in Ireland have commenced widespread strike action, marking the largest industrial mobilization in the country since 2009. The protests involve teachers, healthcare workers, and civil servants who are demanding pay increases that outpace the rising cost of living and inflation.
Union representatives, including those from the ASTI and TUI, have criticized the government's recent budget allocation of 1.2 billion euro for a public sector pay deal, labeling it an “insult” that fails to protect workers' purchasing power. TUI reported that over 98% of its members voted in favor of the industrial action.
The strikes have caused significant disruptions, particularly in the healthcare sector, where hospitals have warned of thousands of canceled medical procedures. While emergency services continue to operate with limited staff, other public amenities and offices have faced closures.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed hope that an agreement could be reached to avoid a second scheduled strike day on October 21. He stated that the government is focused on enabling negotiations to conclude a new national pay agreement.
