Ireland reduces student contribution fee by €150

Following protests by approximately one thousand students, including members of the Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union, the Irish government has implemented a €150 reduction in the maximum student contribution fee. This brings the fee down to €2,350.

Critics argue the reduction is insufficient, noting that the saving equates to roughly €12.50 per month, which does not address the high cost of living for students. Previous estimates placed average student living costs between €12,000 and €14,000 annually.

While the fee cut is modest, other changes in the budget include a 4.5 per cent increase in SUSI maintenance rates, providing some students with up to €357 extra per year. Additionally, new household income bands have been introduced to provide fee reductions for families earning between €120,000 and €150,000.
