Ireland refuses visas to over half of Gazan scholarship students

At least 31 of 59 Palestinian students from Gaza have been refused study visas for Ireland, despite securing fully or partially funded scholarships from Irish universities. The students were scheduled to begin courses at University College Dublin, University of Limerick, and the National College of Art and Design within weeks.

Academics and legal professionals have criticized the Irish government's handling of the applications. Common reasons cited for the refusals include requests for original bank statements, gaps in education or employment, and insufficient evidence of obligations to return home. Critics argue these requirements are difficult to meet because the destruction of civilian infrastructure and educational institutions in Gaza has made obtaining such documentation nearly impossible.

While some officials have raised concerns regarding documentation to prevent individuals associated with Hamas from entering, supporters note that the universities have already conducted their own authentication processes. Since 2024, more than 70 Gazan students have arrived in Ireland through an initiative involving the Department of Foreign Affairs.
