Ireland reports significant increase in SIDS rates

The National Paediatric Mortality Register (NPMR) has reported a significant increase in the rate of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in Ireland. Between 2019 and 2023, the national rate rose from 0.20 per 1,000 live births to 0.46 per 1,000 live births. The 25 recorded SIDS deaths in 2023 represent the highest annual figure since 2008.

Preliminary findings from a Health Service Executive (HSE) review identified a “stark” social gradient, noting that SIDS rates are higher in disadvantaged communities. Experts suggest the rise may be linked to reduced awareness, inconsistent adherence to safer sleep guidelines, or gaps in targeted prevention.

The National Office of Clinical Audit (NOCA) has recommended strengthening national prevention actions, including providing parents and caregivers with clear, consistent advice on safe sleep practices. There are also calls for a renewed national public awareness campaign and additional support for high-risk families to address the trend.
