Ireland senior cycle reforms face criticism from teachers and mathematicians

Ireland’s ongoing reform of the senior cycle and the Leaving Certificate is facing significant criticism from educators and mathematical experts. The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) has expressed concern regarding the management of the curriculum redevelopment, noting that strict parameters set by the Minister for Education have caused tension and a perceived disregard for diverse opinions on subject content.

Specific concerns have been raised regarding the new draft specification for Leaving Certificate mathematics released by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA). Critics, including former NCCA mathematics committee member Professor Pauline Mellon, warn that the proposed changes could harm mathematical education standards. Experts suggest that if implemented, the new curriculum could disadvantage students, reduce Ireland’s standing in international comparisons, and negatively impact industries requiring quantitative skills.
