Ireland taxi regulations spark debate over infant safety and costs
In Ireland, licensed taxis are legally exempt from the requirement to provide child safety seats. While the Road Safety Authority (RSA) confirms that children are exempt from mandatory car seat use when traveling in a taxi, the Health Service Executive (HSE) warns that carrying an infant on a passenger's lap is dangerous during sudden braking or collisions.
To ensure safety, some families opt for private transfers that provide appropriate car seats. However, these services can be expensive; one reported flat rate for a private transfer to Dublin Airport for three passengers and an infant was 159 euro. This high cost for essential safety equipment has drawn attention from international media, including The Times, highlighting the dilemma parents face between safety and affordability.
