Ireland to double e-scooter fines amid safety crackdown
The Irish government is doubling Fixed Charge Notice fines for e-scooter offences from €50 to €100, effective November 18. This measure follows a series of legislative changes aimed at addressing rising injury rates, particularly among children and teenagers.
Recent data from Children’s Health Ireland indicated that e-scooters became the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries at the Temple Street campus in 2025. The number of children suffering such injuries rose from one in June 2023 to 25 by May 2024. In response, the minimum age to operate an e-scooter has been increased to 18, effectively banning minors from using them.
Under the new regulations, Gardaí are authorized to issue fines for riding without helmets or high-visibility gear and have the power to confiscate vehicles from underage riders. Minister of State Seán Canney approved these measures as part of a broader road safety initiative approved in July 2026.
