Ireland to establish body to research constitutional future and unity

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has announced plans to establish a new government body to research and prepare for the potential constitutional future of Ireland, including the possibility of unification with Northern Ireland. The initiative marks the first time the Irish government will formally assess models for a united Ireland.

The proposed body will examine several scenarios: a unitary 32-county state, Northern Ireland remaining part of the United Kingdom, or Northern Ireland maintaining its own devolved powers and institutions within a united Ireland. Research will cover legal and constitutional implications, public services such as health and education, economic costs, security, defense, and national symbols.

Martin expressed concern regarding recent calls for a border poll, describing them as “partisan” and a “one-sided advocacy approach” that seeks to present unification as inevitable. Under the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, the British government is obligated to call a referendum if it appears likely that a majority in Northern Ireland favors unity. A Cabinet memo regarding the new body is expected before Christmas.
