Ireland to introduce €100 culture vouchers for teenagers
The Irish government is planning to introduce a €100 digital voucher for 16-year-olds as part of the upcoming Budget 2027. The initiative, driven by Minister for Arts, Media and Culture Patrick O’Donovan, aims to boost youth engagement in the cultural sector following a post-pandemic decline in attendance at live events.
The vouchers are expected to be redeemable for tickets to live music, theatre, comedy, drama, and cinema via a downloadable digital card. There are ongoing discussions regarding whether the scheme could be expanded to include 17-year-olds or if it should cover sporting events and creative workshops. The projected cost to the state is estimated to be between €7 million and €8 million.
Supporters, including Fianna Fáil TD Peter Cleere, argue the scheme will provide a significant economic boost to local businesses. Beyond admission fees, the spending is expected to create a rippling effect through increased expenditure on transportation, food, and merchandise. The scheme aligns Ireland with similar youth culture initiatives in countries such as Spain, France, Italy, and Germany.
