Ireland U21 secures Euro playoff spot with victory over England
The Ireland U21 men's football team has secured a spot in the Euro U21 playoffs following a historic 3-1 victory over England. The win, achieved at Turner’s Cross in Cork, marks a significant turnaround for the squad following a 4-0 loss to Andorra last November.
Striker Tommy Lonergan scored twice in the match, while Conor McManus added a third goal to seal the comeback victory. Manager Jim Crawford praised the team's resilience and aggressive pressing style, noting that the squad successfully challenged an England side valued at approximately €400 million.
Ireland will learn their playoff opponent in a draw scheduled for Friday. Potential opponents include Greece, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Turkey, the Netherlands, or Czechia. The playoff matches are set to take place on November 13 and 17.
