Ireland U21s defeat England to secure Euro play-off berth

The Republic of Ireland U21 football team secured a place in the Euro U21 play-offs following a 3-1 victory over England at Turner’s Cross. Tommy Lonergan scored twice to lead the win, while Conor McManus added a third goal.

The victory ended England’s 12-game unbeaten streak and allowed Ireland to finish second in their group, ahead of Slovakia on a head-to-head tiebreaker. This comeback follows a difficult period for the team, which had previously trailed Slovakia by eight points after losses to Andorra and Moldova.

Ireland’s performance was characterized by high pressing, with all three goals resulting from that tactic. England, managed by Lee Carsley, utilized several players including Archie Gray and Ethan Nwaneri, but were unable to overcome the Irish side.
