Ireland urged to focus on sovereign AI inferencing

Mark Hopkins, a managing director at Dell Technologies Ireland, suggests that Ireland should pivot its strategy to become Europe’s hub for sovereign AI inferencing rather than attempting to master every layer of the AI technology stack.

Sovereign AI inferencing involves running AI models on infrastructure located within a specific country or region, ensuring operations remain subject to local rules and regulations. This approach allows governments and organizations to manage AI activity while meeting standards for security, compliance, risk management, and sustainability.

With Ireland holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU, Hopkins argues the nation faces a defining moment. He notes that as neighboring countries compete to lead in AI development and semiconductor manufacturing, Ireland has a significant opportunity to establish itself by addressing practical challenges regarding where AI runs and who controls it.
