Ireland's Cybersecurity Bill Boosts Board Accountability Amid AI Defense Rise
Cyber attackers are increasingly using artificial intelligence to automate reconnaissance, vulnerability discovery and rapid data exfiltration, shrinking the window for detection to minutes. AI‑powered Network Detection and Response (NDR) solutions, such as WatchGuard NDR, analyse network traffic in real time, learn normal behaviour, and flag anomalous activity, providing unified visibility across on‑premise, cloud and remote environments and automating investigation and response.
At the same time, Ireland is implementing its 2024 National Cyber Security Bill to transpose the EU NIS2 Directive. The legislation expands the scope of critical infrastructure, imposes board‑level governance duties and introduces personal liability for directors who fail to oversee cyber‑risk management. Boards must document decision‑making, fund adequate security measures and demonstrate compliance with an “all hazards” approach. The Bill mirrors NIS2 requirements across the EU, signalling a shift from technical to strategic responsibility for cyber resilience.
Together, the rise of AI‑driven security tools and the tightening of regulatory oversight underscore a growing imperative for organisations to adopt proactive, board‑supported cyber defence strategies.
