Ireland's Ministers Seek EU Fisheries Reform as Fishermen Protest

Italian Minister Francesco Lollobrigida warned that current EU fishing rules are driving a crisis for European fishermen, citing a projected 61% drop in western Mediterranean hake fishing days from 84,761 in 2020 to 33,036 in 2026 and a 40% reduction in Italian fishing days from 116,982 to 71,458 over the same period. He blamed competition from Chinese and other third‑country vessels operating in the Mediterranean without respecting EU regulations.

In Ireland, Sinn Féin TD Conor D. McGuinness told EU Fisheries Commissioner Costas Kadis that the Common Fisheries Policy is "manifestly unjust" to Irish fishers, noting that Belgium receives larger quotas in Irish waters than the entire Irish fleet. Kadis said he will pursue targeted reforms of the policy.

During Ireland’s EU Council Presidency, about 20 members of the National Inshore Fishermen’s Association protested in Kinsale, demanding fair quota distribution, implementation of Article 17 and more support for small‑scale fishers. Irish Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon announced that the EU will adapt the regulatory framework to address fishermen’s concerns, focusing on fleet modernization, generational renewal and improved funding.

Commissioner Kadis highlighted the ageing European fishing workforce, with an average age over 50, and stressed the need to attract younger entrants to sustain coastal communities.
