Ireland's McEntee warns EU is losing credibility over Israel response

Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Helen McEntee has warned that the European Union is losing credibility due to its response to the Israeli government’s actions in the occupied Palestinian territories. Speaking in New York ahead of the UN General Assembly, McEntee stated that the EU must adopt a united approach to exert meaningful pressure, noting, “We are failing here, to be quite honest.”

McEntee highlighted that Irish legislation banning the import of Israeli goods from occupied territories has recently come into force, a move that has prompted other nations to consider similar measures. She emphasized that while Ireland has recognized Palestine and implemented specific legislation and sanctions, these actions lack impact without an EU-wide collective response. The Minister maintained that Israel is violating international law and described the situation as an “attempt to erase a population.”

In separate domestic developments, Irish officials are managing various administrative and economic initiatives. Minister Thomas Byrne is set to chair the EU General Affairs Council in Brussels to discuss the next Multiannual Financial Framework, while the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment is exploring new data tools to monitor economic pressures in the hospitality, retail, and tourism sectors.
