IREN Centro wastewater plant faces environmental risk allegations in Junín

The wastewater treatment plant at the Instituto Regional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas (IREN) Centro, located in the Palo Seco sector of Concepción province, is facing allegations of deficient operation that could pose an environmental risk.

A formal complaint has requested intervention from the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office, claiming the facility is inoperative. Photographic evidence reportedly shows chambers and compartments without visible water, raising concerns that wastewater from the oncology center may not be properly processed before final disposal.

Pablo Rodríguez Ruiz, the general director of IREN Centro, denied that the plant is completely paralyzed. He stated that the facility has been operating at 50% capacity since August and that wastewater continues to receive treatment. The director noted that the institute is currently processing the hiring of a maintenance company with a budget of S/30,000. Administrative procedures are expected to conclude in November, with work scheduled to begin in December. The institution reports it processes approximately 25 cubic meters of wastewater daily and reuses treated effluent for irrigation within the facility.
