IREN Sur oncology institute construction begins in Arequipa

Construction has officially begun on the new Regional Institute of Neoplastic Diseases of the South (IREN Sur) in Arequipa, Peru. Managed by the National Infrastructure Authority (ANIN), the project involves an investment of approximately S/ 1,188 to 1,200 million and is expected to be completed within three years.

The new facility is designed to decentralize specialized cancer care for more than 9.7 million people across the southern macro-region. The infrastructure will span roughly 42,434 square meters and include between 200 and 352 beds, 10 operating rooms, 18 chemotherapy centers, and 28 oncology consultation rooms. It will feature specialized units for intensive care, neonatal intensive care, and emergency services.

While the definitive work has started with earthmoving and foundation tasks, a contingency hospital is also under construction. That facility is over 70% complete and is expected to be finished by late 2024, allowing for the transfer of current services. The contingency hospital is slated to begin a trial operation period in January 2027.
