Irena Mulamuhić, legendary Bosnian actress, passes away at 81

Renowned Bosnian actress Irena Mulamuhić has passed away at the age of 81, just four days after her 81st birthday. Her career spanned over five decades, during which she performed more than one hundred roles across theatre, film, television, and radio.

Mulamuhić was a long-standing member of the National Theatre Sarajevo and began her professional journey at the Youth Theatre Sarajevo in 1969. She was notably active during the Siege of Sarajevo, continuing to perform in productions such as ‘Sklonište’ and ‘Waiting for Godot’, the latter directed by American writer and director Susan Sontag.

Her filmography includes prominent roles in internationally recognized works such as ‘Quo Vadis, Aida?’, ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’, and ‘Snow’. She also received acclaim for her performance in ‘Polenov prah’, earning awards at the Niš Film Encounters and the Pula Film Festival. In 2020, she was honored with the ‘Adem Čejvan’ award for her lifetime achievement in Bosnian acting.
