IRENA reports global renewable electricity reaches 9,836 TWh in 2024

Renewable electricity generation grew 9.8% in 2024, producing 9,836 terawatt‑hours (TWh) and accounting for 31.7% of total global electricity, versus a 1.4% rise in non‑renewable generation. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) said the increase was driven mainly by solar and wind power.

Asia remained the largest producer with 4,589 TWh, up 14.3% year‑on‑year. Europe generated 1,758 TWh (+7.2%), North America 1,535 TWh (+5.8%), and South America 1,047 TWh (+2.9%). IRENA highlighted that meeting the COP31‑backed target of 35% electrification of final energy demand by 2035 would require renewable electricity’s share to rise to 78%, implying a 2.5‑fold increase from current levels.

Renewable capacity additions reached a record 693 GW in 2025, bringing total installed renewable capacity to 5.2 TW (49.5% of worldwide power capacity). Director‑General Francesco La Camera emphasized that the technologies are commercially available and called for faster deployment to enhance energy security and economic competitiveness.
