Spanish left-wing parties fail to reach unified list for 2026 elections

Left-wing political groups in Spain have failed to reach a unified national candidate list for the general elections scheduled for November 29, 2026. Negotiations between Podemos and the Frente Amplio coalition collapsed after failing to reach an agreement on list placement and political direction.

Gabriel Rufián of ERC described the failed attempt at unity as an “absolute failure” and a “vodevil,” expressing regret over the confusion caused to voters. Despite the national breakdown, some regional agreements were successfully finalized. Coalitions have been established in the Canary Islands, where Podemos, Nueva Canarias, IU, and Sumar will run under the brand Unidad del Pueblo Canario, and in the Valencian Community through the Compromís-Front Valencià coalition.

In Aragon, CHA and Frente Amplio Aragón have agreed to run together, though reports suggest this pact excludes Podemos. In Catalonia, Podemos has reached a cooperation agreement with ERC, which Irene Montero described as “valuable,” even as the two groups will compete separately in other major constituencies like Madrid and Barcelona.
