Irene Pivetti faces trial over fraudulent Covid mask imports

The Milan Prosecutor's Office has requested a trial for former Member of Parliament Irene Pivetti and eight others regarding a fraudulent deal involving face masks imported from China during the Covid-19 emergency. The investigation centers on Only Italia Logistics, a company where Pivetti served as CEO from 2018 until its bankruptcy in 2022.

Prosecutors allege that while the total transaction was valued at 35 million euros, only 10 million euros worth of medical devices were actually delivered. Technical assessments described the delivered goods as being of poor quality, lacking necessary safety requirements, and bearing a false CE marking, rendering them essentially unusable.

The 67 counts of indictment include public procurement fraud, bankruptcy, embezzlement, money laundering, and self-laundering. In addition to Pivetti, the defendants include entrepreneur Luciano Mega and the daughter and son-in-law of the former Lega politician. The case, which has moved between the jurisdictions of Rome, Busto Arsizio, and Milan, now awaits a decision from a judge during a preliminary hearing.
