Gheorghe Moldovan suicide sparks conflicting family allegations

Conflicting accounts have emerged following the suicide of Gheorghe Moldovan, a 30-year-old football referee from Moldova, who shot himself in the head on September 28 near Orhei.

Irina Moldovan, the referee's wife with whom he was divorcing, alleges a history of physical, psychological, and economic abuse. She claims Moldovan controlled her movements and finances, and accused him of causing a serious injury to their daughter by breaking her femur during a period of anger. Irina stated she attempted to intervene and save his life during his final moments, noting he arrived at their home with flowers while wearing a shirt that read, “Divorce kills, the woman kills.”

In response, the deceased's brother, Dima Moldovan, has contested these claims. He asserts that the daughter's injury was an accident occurring while the father was playing with her, and that Irina had filed a police report regarding the incident which deeply affected Gheorghe. Dima suggested that the divorce and subsequent legal pressures contributed to his brother's depression and mental state.
