Irish deaf woman freed after family abuse convictions

Four of seven family members were found guilty of a total of 13 sexual‑abuse offences against a profoundly deaf woman after an eight‑month, 131‑day trial in Dublin's Central Criminal Court – the longest criminal trial in the state's history. The abuse, carried out by her uncle and three half‑brothers, spanned 11 years from 2003 to 2014 and occurred in the family home and her grandparents' house. One convicted brother fled bail and remains at large, while two other uncles were acquitted and related rape charges were withdrawn.

The survivor, who suffered severe language deprivation and limited means of communication, told the court she now feels free and safe after leaving the abusive environment and receiving support from her partner. She described years of fear, anxiety and suicidal thoughts, and expressed hope that a new life away from her family would bring lasting security.
