Ireland's senior politicians hit by deepfake financial scam videos

Deepfake videos of Irish leaders Simon Harris and Micheál Martin were used to promote bogus investment schemes, scamming vulnerable individuals out of thousands of euros. Harris, Ireland’s Tánaiste, said the AI‑altered clip of him endorsing a financial product was “highly convincing,” requiring a second look to spot the fraud. He warned that social‑media platforms profit from such content and called for stronger EU‑level action against financial‑crime risks, including misuse of crypto assets.

Martin, the Taoiseach, also publicly denounced a fabricated video claiming he could help users earn large sums from a €250 investment. He highlighted the video’s obvious flaw—an English accent that betrayed the deepfake—while urging platforms to remove such material quickly. Both officials used the incidents to stress the growing threat of AI‑driven scams and the need for tighter regulation and public vigilance.
