Irish nurses and midwives protest over pay and staffing
Nurses and midwives across Ireland are engaging in industrial action as part of an ongoing public sector pay dispute. Members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) held lunchtime protests at various hospitals nationwide, including University Hospital Limerick and Letterkenny University Hospital, on Thursday.
The protests are driven by concerns over the cost of living and severe staffing shortages. Workers reported that understaffing is impacting mental health and that many are struggling to meet basic costs such as rent and heating. There are also concerns that the current conditions are driving young professionals to move abroad.
The INMO has announced that industrial action will escalate. Full-day stoppages are scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, and Wednesday, October 21. These strikes are expected to cause significant disruptions, including the cancellation of clinics and elective surgeries.
